Covid-19 requires the best of us, and I do mean to say us. While many are confined to our homes, there is a deep sense that we are all in this together. Nations are uniting, medical facilities are merging, and competing suppliers are working together to fill the most pressing needs. We are more aware than ever that we are all connected through the pandemic that is facing our world. Together, we will not only come through the challenges that face us, but we will be better because of them!
At All People Free our work is to end slavery for those stuck in the brick kilns. We are clearer on that mission now than ever before. We believe with your help we will see slavery end for millions.
While we continue to support our work in the brickyards, these uncertain times have changed some of the immediate needs we are faced with. The health and safety of our students and families are our first priority. Currently, our schools are on hold to try to slow the spread of covid-19. We are continuing to pay our teachers and partners through this time, and they are doing everything they can to keep themselves and their families safe while also staying connected to the brickyards and families needs.
Preventative measures such as hand washing, sanitizing, and social distancing are impossible in the brickyards where they use communal water sources, have little access to healthcare, and live in close proximity. That said, the biggest need we are seeing right now is the need for access to food. The lockdowns are preventing families from going out to get groceries under the threat of violence from law enforcement. Even so, many grocery stores have increased prices due to the high demand, making them unaffordable to many families. We are working with our partners to get food to these families as quickly as possible, and every dollar helps us feed them for one more day. We are confident that if we work together, we can keep these families fed and cared for during this time.
We are passionate about getting these families out of the brickyards and into homes and jobs that are safe and sustainable, and we aren’t stopping til we do! We are still working toward ending the systemic slavery that keeps so many families in unsafe conditions, and now more than ever we see the urgency of ending this system for good. We will be back holding classes and working toward sustainable businesses for all of these families as soon as it is safe to do so, and in the meantime, we are there to attend to the needs that arise–starting with getting food to the brickyards.
If you’d like to help support these families and help them get food during the pandemic, visit our donation page (linked above) to make a contribution. Every little bit helps as we get supplies to families. If you’d like to help in other ways, please contact us at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
This is a trying time for us all, but we aren’t giving up! We fully believe we can get through this together, and that all people deserve to be free, and fed!
